RSD-B designates the centralized shut off portion of the rapid shut down system. Only one (1) of these units is required per complete solar system. The RSD-B can accommodate up to 60x RSD-PS unit (120 solar panels). If more panels are required, the RSD-B-XL is also available and can accommodate up to 120x RSD-PS (240 solar panels).

In order to meet NEC requirements for rapid shut down, the rapid shut down system can draw power from either the main batteries, grid input or the inverter AC output. If installed in a grid tied system which has the capability of feeding back to the grid, the system MUST be wired to the incoming AC power from the grid to meet the code. This ensures that no power feeding back into the grid which could potentially shock workers performing a task on the grid infrastructure. It may also be required in hybrid inverter modes where the grid is present but power is not intentionally fed back to the grid.

Due to the NEC requirements for the shut off process, the rapid shut off system prohibits solar charging if the AC output is no longer ON (if AC is chosen as power source for RSD-B or RSD-B-XL). This can be caused by an operator turning the system off or a low voltage event causing inverter shut off. Once this occurs, the system will not be able to turn back on charge via solar until charged by a generator or grid. If the 48V battery source is chosen as the main power source for RSD-B or RSD-B-XL, the system will continue to allow charging via solar even if the inverter AC output has powered off. This offers a better solution for those who are not connected to the grid or could potentially feed back into the grid. This however does not prevent a situation where the inverter AC has powered OFF and the batteries have depleted and gone into protection mode, likely due to standby power consumption from the inverter or self discharge from the batteries via the natural chemical process. Once the batteries have turned off due to low voltage protection, grid or generator power will be required to revive the system to continue normal operation.
